Gardening has become increasingly popular, it’s a great way to relax and ease any stresses or anxiety from your mind. Here are 5 great tips for getting cheap garden plants into your garden, for free or on a budget. It’s a hobby, which can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to have you paying full price for plants. It’s also a great way to be greener and reduce your climate footprint.

Save Money and Save the Planet

1.  Buy plants when they are very small plugs, at this size you will need a greenhouse to grow them on. You will get them at a much cheaper price, definitely worth trying either a local nursery, garden centre or one of the large online plant retailers.

2. Check local supermarkets for pots of spring bulbs that have flowered and gone over, they will be reduced in price.  Plant them in your garden, and you will have lovely spring flowers every year for a budget price.

3.  Grow plants from seed if you have the greenhouse or sunny windowsill. Look out for local seed swaps or buy them for pennies at the end of growing season sales at your local garden centre.

4. Seeking plants! Be cheeky, ask friends or neighbours, you could put a post up on your social media. Maybe they are splitting a plant, or could let you take a cutting, or you can collect some seeds. Fellow gardeners are happy to share a plant or two.

5. Join a local gardening group, club or allotment. There is definitely more of a push for greener gardening at the moment, and local communities working together. Linking in with one of these groups you will be able to participate in any plant swaps or seed swaps they may have.

Saving the Planet

Remember, if you can not find a local gardening group to join, be proactive and consider setting up your own. Or maybe a local online Facebook group. Check for a local climate change / eco friendly group online, they are usually happy to get involved and spread the word.

Happy gardening!
