The wonderful arrival of spring in the garden, that happy sigh from gardeners everywhere as plants burst into life once again. You will find ideas for how to add colour to all areas of your garden. But first greenhouses, seed trays, propagator units and cold frames all require a gardener’s attention.
Early Spring Colour
Bulbs are coming into their own and add a dramatic burst of spring colour. Snowdrops, Crocuses, Daffodils, Hyacinths, Grape Hyacinths, are so many to choose from. It is also a good time to note if you have any gaps in the garden, ready for ordering bulbs later in the year. Taking a photo is a great prompt of what is needed.
Fruit and Vegetables
Fruit trees will be bedecked with beautiful delicate blossoms in spring, which will then float in the air like confetti. Choose from plum, apples, pears, damson, quince or crab apple trees. You can add a fan tree version to a spare wall or fence, these compact trees are great if you are short of space.
A few strawberry plants maybe, or better still a compact bushy raspberry plant that will happily grow in a pot.
Vegetables
Growing your own is not just the right thing to do, it’s also rewarding. Your vegetables will have a smaller carbon footprint, and you will know exactly how they have been grown. Organically with no pesticides. Courgettes, beetroot and salads are great for newbie gardeners. Plant up with brightly coloured flowers such as marigolds will provide some eco-friendly pest control.

Share your seeds or planting ideas with a neighbour or your virtual online friends, the gardening community on Twitter and Instagram is so supportive and informative. Seed swap by post with your virtual friends. Join in with a Facebook gardening group, whether that be local to you, national or internationally.

Trendy Floral Colours
2022 is the year of contrasting colours in the garden. Be brave and mix up the colours in your flower beds. You can find bright shades of orange, pinks, purples or reds. Flowers such as Sweet Peas, Zinnias, Cosmos, Sunflowers and Peligoniums can be grown in beds or pots. Grow from seed or buy small plug plants to grow on, whichever suits your budget. Annual planting can quickly add colour to your garden. Growing from seed is so rewarding and obviously a fraction of the price. Save some seeds this year for free blooms the following year.
Flowers Indoors and Out
These plants are perfect for cutting flowers, bringing the beautiful flower scent and colour into your home. Don’t be afraid to cut your blooms as this will make way for the plant to keep on flowering.
Share the joy of flowers. Give a random act of kindness of a flower posy to a friend or neighbour, you will see the smile on their face as they breathe in the floral scent.
Other Ways to Add Colour
Brush down last year’s garden furniture ready for a repaint, choose a bright colour. Or if you are not feeling brave enough, add a few brightly coloured cushions instead. No need to buy colourful plastic pots, paint a small terracotta flower pot blue, red or orange. This looks so appealing when potted up with a pretty plant such as a busy lizzy or try a geranium for less watering. Place on the table of your patio set, and it’s the perfect colourful arrangement.
