Millefeuille Recipe

Strawberry and Lemon Millefeuille
Millefeuille another bake on my recipe list, this one made back in February for my mums birthday. I did not quite follow the recipe, I made a few tweaks with the filling. I was baking these to serve 13 members of the family, all of which I knew would want more than one. Hence so many took an awful lot of assembling.

Easy Easter Egg Decorating

Fun craft idea decorating Easter Eggs with pen
Easter egg fun!
I have indulged myself in a touch of simple Easter crafting and like many people I find Pinterest a great source of inspiration. Whilst browsing for Easter ideas I discovered this great pin for decorating eggs using felt tip pens.

Dotty Egg
  • duck eggs
  • felt tip pens(non toxic)
So off I went to raid my nieces craft box (she will not mind, honest!) make sure the felt tip pens are non toxic just to be safe. I used duck eggs to decorate as they have a white egg shell, but of course you can use standard brown hen eggs. You may want to gently hard boil your eggs first to make them easier to handle, and avoid any unnecessary mess should you accidentally crack an egg. I did a blog post earlier this week that will help if you are unsure on how to boil an egg.

These are very simple to do and they make a very effective Easter decorations or some very special Easter Eggs for the Easter Bunny to hide, ready for the big Easter Egg Hunt.

Happy Easter!

Flowers in bloom at my local park

Bowring Park
Springtime flowers in the park
Not only do I consider myself lucky that I have a wonderful garden, but I am also lucky enough to live near a local park, which at the moment is looking rather splendid. There are some wonderful planted flower beds surrounding the well manicured bowling greens.

For the last few years there has always been a fabulous display of Tulips amongst a carpet of wonderful pink Forget-Me-Nots. I have blue Forget-Me-Nots in my garden which is the colour most people associate with this flower, so it makes a change to see the pink. Which I think works well with the planting of the Tulips, although I did prefer the darker pink Tulips planted last year.

Sadly the small Victorian building in the park has been beset by two arson attacks, the last one only a day before the small cafe inside was due to reopen following the repairs from the initial attack.  I will not waste any words on these culprits, only that I hope the cafe will re-open very soon.

Easter Rocky Road and Chocolate Nest Cupcakes

I love baking for Easter, there are so many difference treats to choose from, instead of hitting my bookshelf of recipe books I visited the Baking Mad website. I was lucky enough to receive a parcel of chocolate related Silver Spoon goodies from Baking Mad, so it seem only logical to choose something chocolaty. There is over forty Easter recipes on the Baking Mad website to choose from, I settled on making Chocolate Nest Cupcakes and then also some Easter Rocky Road.

Chocolate Nest Cakes for Easter
This week is my first time back in the office since being ill at the start of March, I work in an office where you take in cakes for your birthday and mine had been and gone at the start of April, it simply would not do if I turned up empty handed! I think it is fair to say they are really being spoilt at work.

Easter treats!
The Chocolate Nest Cupcakes were fun to make, children will really enjoy adding a dollop of butter cream on top of the cake then creating the nest with chocolate pops and popping in the eggs.  They really do look very pretty and effective.

The special Easter Rocky Road recipe includes creme eggs and mini eggs, the Baking Mad recipe includes pieces of fudge, but as I did not have any I replaced this with sultanas.

I followed the recipes using my i-phone, for each recipe on the mobile version of the Baking Mad website there is a handy Baking Mode. I have to say it made it easy to follow the steps as you work through each recipe.

Eggs are not just for Easter - Recipe book giveaway (closed)

Lion Eggs

Eggs there is no escaping them at the moment as April sees the arrival of Easter - hen, duck, chocolate, paper, china or even plastic eggs. They are one of the most versatile of foods, though it is too difficult to choose my favourite way of enjoying them.  Boiled, fried, scrambled or poached. Then of course there is baking with eggs - ooh cakes! What is your perfect egg?

Who fancies poached egg?
Do you know how to boil the perfect egg? I simple task but there is a fine balance in getting from a runny, soft to hard yolk.
  • hard boiled egg - perfect for those egg sandwiches for an afternoon tea
  • soft boiled egg - perfect for dipping those soldiers of bread and butter or toast.
Lion eggs have an easy to follow guide to help you with how to boil an egg. You will also find some really useful information on egg nutrition and egg safety.

Did you know the an egg contains an average of 55 to 80 calories depending on its size. Now that has got to be much healthy than a chocolate Easter egg!
